Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (Gallstone Removal)

Gallbladder stones (cholelithiasis) can cause severe pain in the upper right abdomen (biliary colic), nausea, vomiting, and bloating, especially after eating fatty meals. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder containing stones. It is one of the most common and safest keyhole surgeries performed worldwide.

The Keyhole Procedure

Through 3 or 4 tiny incisions (ports) in the abdomen, a camera (laparoscope) and micro-surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon inflates the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas to create working space, dissects the gallbladder away from the liver bed, clips the cystic duct and artery, and extracts the gallbladder through one of the port holes.
